Elephant Art Project

The human-elephant conflict, including poaching, has resulted in an increasing number of displaced and orphaned elephant calves. Through art, we can make a difference.

Artist François Vandenberghe, internationally recognized for his lifelike bronze elephant sculptures, has long advocated for wild elephant survival. His dedication aligns perfectly with the mission of HERD, South Africa's first dedicated elephant orphanage founded by Adine Roode, which focuses on caring for and rehabilitating orphaned elephants.

Leveraging personal connections with Adine Roode and Oliver Cafmeyer from Cafmeyer Gallery, which exclusively represents the artist's work, our founders organized a unique collaborative fundraiser. This partnership has resulted in two exquisite limited edition bronze sculptures based on elephants from the Jabulani Herd.

The Sculptures

Tokwe & Kumbura

This sculpture depicts two remarkable female elephants from the Jabulani Herd.

Tokwe led the way for the original herd rescued from Zimbabwe. She is extremely kind, patient, accepting, and nurturing, always leading by example and an excellent decision maker. As a mother of two elephants, Tokwe continues to welcome orphans into her family with open arms.

Kumbura is a lovely young female elephant with a genuine love for calves. As an orphan herself, she was successfully integrated into the Jabulani Herd and is now the youngest allomother. With her natural empathy and protective instincts, she is destined to become a phenomenal mother and potentially a future matriarch.

Sebakwe & Khanyisa

This sculpture portrays the bond between a dominant male and a very special young elephant.

Sebakwe is a confident and reliable elephant who acts protectively and genuinely cares about every member of the herd. He commands respect with his cheerful personality, yet shows remarkable softness toward young calves like Khanyisa.

Khanyisa has been in the orphanage's care since January 2020, after being found with serious injuries from a poaching trap around her neck. This brave albino elephant has shown tremendous strength of character and inspired countless people during her recovery. The unique structure of the Jabulani Herd, composed mostly of orphaned elephants, enabled Khanyisa's successful integration into her adoptive family. Sebakwe was one of the first males she was introduced to in 2020.
